OPERA POSTERS

OPERA POSTERS.  The majority of our opera posters were produced for productions at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London.  All our posters are guaranteed to be originals which were produced for display in London and elsewhere to advertise the ORIGINAL production. Until the late 1970s it was not usual for the Royal Opera to produce individual posters for each production and, instead, these were usually generic 'house style' posters that listed seasons of operas with dates of performances.  From the 1980s onwards, however, the Royal Opera House began to issue beautifully designed posters for each production.  Because these typically ran for only 6 or 7 performances the numbers produced for advertising purposes were necessarily few in number.  The production quality of these posters is particularly fine and they were usually printed on stout, good quality paper in rich colours, often lettered or highlighted in gold.  ROH posters were usually issued in 2 sizes but with identical designs - double crown (30 x 20 inches) and play bill (20 x 13 inches). From an early date the artistic worth of these posters was acknowledged and the ROH retained two copies of each POSTER for its own collection and examples are also housed at the Victoria and Albert Museum.  Scroll down for a selection of our opera posters for sale.
